ABI register to provide insurers with details of known fraudsters
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has launched the Insurance Fraud Register, to make details of all known insurance fraudsters in the UK available to insurers.
The register was developed by the trade body in conjunction with BAE Systems Detica as an attempt to crack down on insurance cheats costing the industry £19m in claims every week.
According to a report from the ABI, fraud now adds an average £50 extra to the annual insurance bill for every UK policyholder.
The report also stated that insurers detected 139,000 bogus or exaggerated claims in 2011, a 5% increase on 2010.
